Corruption has emerged as a significant problem within Australian trade unions over the last decade. The issue leapt into the newspaper headlines in 2011 following the emergence of details of corrupt conduct by senior officials of the Health Services Union (‘HSU’). As well as the instituting of various civil and criminal proceedings against those officials, the HSU scandal paved the way for a series of regulatory interventions which are still unfolding at the time of writing.
